Home System Upgrades During a Remodel

When walls and ceilings are already open, it is the best time to update plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling and backup power. Doing it during a remodel avoids opening finished rooms later.

Systems are a major share of remodeling work

The 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study found that 62% of renovating homeowners upgraded home systems. NAHB reports that the median age of U.S. homes rose from 31 years in 2006 to 41 years in 2023, and that an aging housing stock is driving remodeling demand. Many Milton homes are now 20 to 35 years old, the age when original water heaters, HVAC equipment and plumbing fixtures reach the end of their service lives.

What to check before a remodel

Electrical

Older panels may not have room for new kitchen circuits, an induction range or an electric vehicle charger. A load calculation tells you whether the panel needs an upgrade.

Plumbing

Remodels are the time to replace old supply lines, add shutoff valves, relocate drains and consider a tankless or larger water heater.

Heating and cooling

Opening up a floor plan or finishing a basement changes the loads on your system. Ductwork may need to be resized or a new zone added.

Backup power and automation

A standby generator, smart thermostats, leak sensors and pre-wired security are easier to add while walls are open.

A note on federal tax credits

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Check current utility rebates and talk with a tax professional before counting on any incentive.

Signs a system is due

  • A water heater older than about 10 to 12 years or showing rust.
  • An HVAC system that runs constantly or struggles in summer.
  • Breakers that trip often or a panel with no open spaces.
  • Polybutylene or galvanized supply lines in older homes.
  • Rooms that are always too hot or too cold.

We note these during the first visit so system work can be priced in the same estimate as the remodel.
